Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
Now that the children are in the upper part of the school, we aim to ensure they are well organised and taking responsibility for their actions. We encourage them to use their resilience and independence to develop their understanding across all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to take full responsibility for completing their homework in order to prepare them for Year 6 and secondary school.
In Maths, children will consolidate their knowledge of place value, the number system, the four operations and learn formal methods of calculation. There is an emphasis on application of skills in order to solve problems and refine their ways of working. We expect children to have secured their multiplication skills and apply this knowledge to decimals, percentages and fractions.
In English we aim to provide opportunities for children to develop a real love of literature and deepen their understanding of a range of texts. It is vital that children continue to read regularly at home. This will allow them to further develop higher order comprehension skills and to widen their vocabulary. We teach children to improve the composition and effect of their writing through accurate use of punctuation and an understanding of more complex grammar. There will always be a focus on improving spelling through weekly games and activities.
